Ontario Heritage Act Notices

The Ontario Heritage Act requires municipalities to provide public notice for certain heritage-related decisions, such as designating individual properties (Part IV) or designating heritage conservation districts (Part V). Traditionally, these notices were published in the local Windsor Star newspaper. The Ontario Heritage Act (the Act) allows municipalities to use alternative modes of publishing notices to the general public, so long as they adhere to the policies under Section 270 of the Municipal Act, 2001

On February 23, 2026, Windsor City Council adopted a policy under Section 270 of the Municipal Act, 2001, to allow Ontario Heritage Act notices to be published digitally on the City’s public website. Notices published online under this policy fully meet the Act’s legal requirements and contain the same mandatory information that the newspaper notices have.

In most cases, heritage notices will be published on the City’s website. When appropriate, notices may also be published in the Windsor Star newspaper or through other communication approaches to increase public awareness.
