Neighbourhood Spaces

Neighbourhood Spaces LogoArtist-in-Residence Program

The City of Windsor, Arts Council Windsor & Region (ACWR), and Broken City Lab (BCL) are pleased to present Neighbourhood Spaces: Windsor & Region Artist-in-Residence Program, a new initiative locating Canadian artists in community sites throughout Windsor and Essex County for 4-6 week artist residencies. Supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, this program allows artists to pursue research and/or create works that engage, explore and connect with local communities.

Neighbourhood Spaces allows artists to work in non-traditional spaces in non-traditional ways, embedding artists in community sites such as parks, nature reserves, libraries, and health or community centres. Community sites provide a "home base" for each artist, so they can work both with and in the community and discover, explore, and respond to its stories, triumphs, and challenges.

Program Goals

Neighbourhood Spaces aims to:

  • Engage in collaborative and community arts practice
  • Expand opportunities for residents and visitors to interact and connect with the arts
  • Facilitate neighbourhood participation in community spaces
  • Provide an opportunity for local and national artists to develop and expand their practice in meaningful ways with/in new communities and environments
  • Encourage civic participation, creating a pride of place
