Ribbon of Friendship Xiaofeng Yin
Xiaofeng Yin
Ribbon of Friendship, 2002
Painted steel, 305 x 240 x 440 centimetres
Xiaofeng Yin’s Ribbon of Friendship reflects the dynamism of two interlocking countries and two cultures: China and Canada. The work is firmly grounded and appears balanced, featuring two red ribbons made of painted steel. It twists skyward while anchored in a point of departure at the centre of a garden. Yin chose red as the predominate colour, as red is a symbol of happiness and luck in the Chinese culture.
Ribbon of Friendship was commissioned by Windsor’s International Relations Committee as part of an international cultural exchange program between the twin cities of Windsor and Changchun in northeast China. The cultural exchange sculpture project has been supported by the City of Windsor Council Services and City Clerk’s Department, the Department of Parks and Recreation, Arts Council Windsor and Region, the University of Windsor, Windsor Endowment for the Arts (WEA), the Art Gallery of Windsor and the Essex County Chinese Canadian Association.
