Windsor’s Downtown Core Adds New Angled Parking Spots

Published

Work has begun to increase parking availability in Windsor’s downtown core, supporting residents, visitors, and local businesses through the creation of additional on-street parking spaces.

Earlier this year, Council endorsed a proposal brought forward to implement angled on-street parking in selected downtown locations where roadway widths permit.

Several streets have been identified as suitable for parking optimization, including portions of Chatham Street East and Pitt Street. The initiative is expected to increase parking capacity in the downtown core by creating 249 new parking spaces, bringing the number of available spaces downtown to 864.

As part of the transition to angled parking, the City is encouraging motorists to familiarize themselves with safe backing procedures when exiting parking spaces.

Safe Backing Tips for Angled Parking:

  • Scan your surroundings before reversing.
  • Use backup lights to signal your intent to other drivers.
  • Look over your shoulder through rear windows, and do not rely solely on cameras or mirrors.
  • Reverse slowly with the steering wheel straight until sufficient clearance is established.
  • Ensure adjacent vehicles have been cleared before beginning a turn.
  • Complete the maneuver carefully while monitoring all surrounding traffic and pedestrians.

Drivers in the areas where angled parking is offered are encouraged to slow down and be aware of vehicles backing out of the parking spaces.

The approved changes are expected to improve access to downtown destinations while making more efficient use of existing roadway infrastructure.

“As part of the City’s Strengthen the Core: Downtown Windsor Revitalization Plan, Council and City Administration have worked collaboratively to identify and leverage all opportunities to help increase engagement downtown. The new angled street parking initiative will complement efforts that are already succeeding in attracting new investments, businesses, residents and visitors to the core. Thanks to Councillor Renaldo Agostino for bringing this idea forward, and to the teams who explored the feasibility and are now ready to deliver these parking enhancements across downtown.”
