Transit Windsor Breaks Ground on the Transit Centre Garage Expansion Project

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Andrew Dowie, and representatives from the City of Windsor and Transit Windsor celebrated the official groundbreaking of the Transit Centre Garage Expansion project at 3700 North Service Road East. The project is the latest phase of a broader, multi-phase investment to modernize Transit Windsor’s primary operations facility. Of the $39.3 million approved for Transit Centre improvements, this phase represents approximately $32.5 million in upgrades, with several improvements already completed.

Funded by the Government of Canada ($15.3 million), and the Province of Ontario ($12.7 million) through the Public Transit stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), and with an investment by the City of Windsor ($11.3 million), the overall project includes facility upgrades that will improve operational efficiency and support future service needs.

This project represents a significant investment in Transit Windsor's future and will modernize the organization's primary operations facility through the following:

  • Approximately 46,000 square feet in building additions to expand the bus storage bay and maintenance areas
  • Upgrading building systems
  • Improving bus service bays
  • Replacing the bus wash and vehicle fueling systems
  • Parking lot, sidewalk, and laneway replacement
  • Site lighting and control upgrades
  • Electrical service and distribution improvements
  • Landscaping, planting, and site restoration
  • New gates and fencing

Construction is being phased to support continued transit operations while improvements are completed, minimizing impacts to riders and ensuring reliable service throughout the project.

This announcement continues to build on a series of recent Transit Windsor infrastructure updates, underscoring ongoing investments in facilities, technology, and service improvements that support riders today and into the future. 

Supported by investments from the City of Windsor, the Province of Ontario, and the Government of Canada, this project highlights the impact of coordinated infrastructure investments across all levels of government. The investment is also part of more than $100 million in funding supporting Transit Windsor infrastructure improvements.
