Students Across Windsor-Essex to Benefit from Expanded Public Transit Access
This September, Transit Windsor will welcome all secondary school students to its regular public transit network — marking a significant milestone in the City of Windsor’s commitment to advancing the City Council–approved Transit Master Plan.
Beginning August 31, 2025, students returning to school will benefit from a significant expansion of Transit Windsor services. The addition of 20,000 service hours will introduce new routes, expanded Sunday service, increased trip frequencies, and more full-time drivers, all aimed at improving the overall transit experience. These enhancements will make public transit more accessible, reliable, and responsive to the needs of students and the broader community.
This fall, students from Holy Names Catholic High School, St. Joseph's Catholic High School, Riverside Secondary School, and Vincent Massey Secondary School will transition from dedicated “school extras” to integrated public transit routes — joining the rest of Windsor’s student population in accessing the broader Transit Windsor network.
To ensure students and families are well-prepared for the transition, Transit Windsor has taken a proactive and supportive approach in the lead-up to the new school year. The Transit Windsor outreach team had the opportunity to visit each of the impacted high schools, allowing them to engage directly with hundreds of students and school administration. The positive impact of these visits prompted the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB) and Greater Essex County District Board (GECDSB) to invite the outreach team to participate in Grade 9 orientation days, taking place August 26, 27 and 28, 2025. Transit Windsor also extended its outreach to feeder schools, equipping Grade 8 students with materials to help them prepare for their future transit experience.
The in-school information sessions are designed to provide practical guidance on route planning, safety, and how to use digital tools like Google Maps, Transit App, Where’s My Bus and Moovit to empower students to confidently navigate their new commute.
Although the new routes will go live in mobile apps on August 31, 2025, Transit Windsor staff have manually mapped out all route options in portable document format (PDF) to allow students to practice their commute in advance. These resources are available online at TransitWindsor.ca, ensuring families can access the information at their convenience:
