Enhancements to Gateway Park with New Outdoor Fitness Area
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held today to officially celebrate the completion of a new outdoor fitness area at Gateway Park (1271 Riverside Drive West). This project will provide free recreation opportunities for residents visiting this unique west-end park between Riverside Drive West and University Avenue West.
The new fitness area features outdoor exercise equipment that can accommodate up to nine users at a time, providing opportunities for residents of varying fitness levels to incorporate strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular activity into their daily routines in a public outdoor space.
The project also included poured-in-place recycled rubber surfacing to improve accessibility and durability, as well as a new wayfinding sign at the corner of Riverside Drive West and Cameron Avenue to help visitors locate Gateway Park and learn more about its amenities.
The outdoor fitness area complements Gateway Park's existing recreational features, creating additional opportunities for residents and visitors to stay active in a welcoming outdoor environment.
Funding for the project was provided through Ward 2 ward funds, supported by both former ward Councillor Fabio Costante and current ward Councillor Frazier Fathers. Support was also received through the Kal Tire RePlay Fund, which helped offset the cost of the recycled rubber surfacing. The RePlay Fund supports community projects across Canada that incorporate recycled rubber products manufactured from Canadian scrap tires.
In addition to expanding access to free outdoor recreation, this new equipment also demonstrates the City's commitment to sustainable infrastructure by incorporating recycled materials into community amenities.
This project was undertaken as part of the City’s 2026 budget, which includes a 0% municipal tax levy increase, a $2.26 billion 10-year capital plan, and over $317 million in investments for 2026 alone. This includes $29.2 million for community services like parks, recreation, facilities, and culture.
