City Invests for First Full Size Cricket Pitch Plus Multi Use Trail Improvements at Derwent Park

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens, Ward 7 Councillor Jeewen Gill and Ward 8 Councillor Gary Kaschak visited Derwent Park today, where plans are in the works to install the city’s first full-size cricket pitch, and to improve multi-use trails at the popular community park.

City Council has committed $100,000 to undertake a complete design that would situate the cricket field within the park while also improving and extending nearby multi-use trails. There are approximately 11 acres of recreational greenspace between Forest Glade Drive and the E.C. Row Expressway – running along the east side of Lauzon Parkway. Derwent Park is currently home to 650 metres of gravel and natural trails that run through a scenic woodlot along the eastern edge of city land. Combined, the woodlot, trail, and open space cover approximately 32 acres in total.

The future cricket pitch would be the first full-size pitch in the city and third pitch overall.

City administration expects to complete the full design by the end of summer, to be presented to Council as a part of the 2023 proposed capital budget.

Quotes:

“It’s important that we continue to activate our available green spaces throughout the city of Windsor to ensure more parks and recreation facilities are accessible to our growing population. Through completion of this important study at Derwent Park, enhancement of this useable space, and installation of the city’s first full-sized cricket pitch, we are delivering results for healthy and active living for residents and visitors.”
– Mayor Drew Dilkens

“Once the study is complete and shovels hit the ground, Derwent Park would be home to the first publicly owned cricket pitch in the city’s East End and see additional trails added to its active transportation network. I’m excited for the future of this park and providing additional outdoor spaces that residents in Forest Glade deserve.”
– Jeewen Gill, Ward 7 City Councillor

“I’m excited for another addition and extension to our multi-use trail path system. This continued connectivity will make East Windsor an even more active and walkable destination. The potential for a full-size cricket pitch is very good news for Windsorites.”
– Gary Kaschak, Ward 8 Councillor
