Accessible Service
Transit Windsor is committed to providing accessible public transit so customers of all abilities can travel safely and independently whenever possible. All regular Transit Windsor fares apply to customers using mobility devices. Companions or attendants are also required to pay the applicable fare.
Please note: Fully accessible buses are not intended to replace Handi-Transit service.
Customer Responsibilities
Customers using wheelchairs or mobility devices must be able to:
- Board, manoeuvre within, and exit the bus independently, safely, and in a timely manner
If assistance is required beyond what the operator can safely provide, the customer must be accompanied by a companion who can assume those responsibilities. We ask all customers to be patient, as boarding and exiting may take additional time for some riders.
General Accessibility Guidelines
Fully accessible buses provide access for customers using:
- Manual or powered wheelchairs
- Mobility scooters
- Wheeled walkers
- Canes
- Customers who can walk but have difficulty using stairs
Each bus can accommodate up to two mobility devices at a time:
- One space is located immediately behind the operator.
- One space is located on the curb directly across the aisle.
Seats in designated mobility device areas must be folded up to accommodate wheelchairs or mobility scooters. If these seats are occupied, the operator will politely ask customers to move.
If both mobility device spaces are occupied, or if the bus is at standing capacity, additional mobility devices cannot be boarded and customers may need to wait for the next accessible bus.
Boarding and Exiting the Bus
- The ramp is deployed for customers using wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
- Upon request, the operator can kneel the bus for customers using walkers or canes.
- All mobility device boarding and exiting occur at the front door.
- Pick-up and drop-off occur at regular bus stops.
Special request stops may be accommodated at the operator’s discretion, provided:
- Conditions are safe
- The ramp can be deployed onto a suitable surface.
Restraints
Transit Windsor operators will assist, to the fullest extent possible, with securing wheelchairs and mobility scooters to floor brackets.
Customers are responsible for:
- Applying brakes on their mobility device
- Using any manufacturer-installed restraints (belts, etc.)
Scooter Policies
Mobility scooters are permitted on buses when space allows.
Requirements include:
- The scooter must fit within the designated mobility device space.
- The scooter must be properly secured to prevent movement or tipping.
- The bus will not move until the device is secured.
For safety reasons:
- Customers must transfer to a bus seat once the scooter is secured.
- Customers may not remain seated on the mobility scooter while the bus is in motion.
Failure to comply with these requirements may result in the customer being unable to ride.
Wheelchair Policies
- Drivers are required to assist a wheelchair passenger by raising the seat at the designated wheelchair spot.
- Passengers are required to apply brakes.
- The driver must secure the chair to the floor brackets to the fullest extent possible before moving the bus.
- Chairs should be clamped and secured at three (3) points, one (1) at the back and two (2) in the front. If a malfunction occurs on a belt or hook, two points are sufficient.
- The driver must secure the lap belt for passengers under 16 years of age, if they are unable to fasten on their own, before moving the bus. Passengers over the age of 16 who are unable to fasten their own belt and do not allow the driver to secure the lap belt are travelling at their own risk and responsibility.
Bicylce Policy
Bicycles are not allowed on City Service buses, they must be mounted on the front bike rack.
Priority Seating
Priority seating is reserved for customers with disabilities and is located near the front of the bus.
Customers are expected to:
- Vacate priority seating when requested by or for a customer with a disability
Please note:
- Priority seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- A customer with a disability is not required to move for another customer with a disability.
- Customers are not expected to leave the bus to make room
- Operators do not enforce seating disputes and rely on customer cooperation and courtesy.
Automated Stop Announcements
All buses are equipped with:
- Onboard audible stop announcements
- Visual stop displays
External audible announcements are also provided at bus stops to assist customers prior to boarding.
