2024 Community Safety and Well-Being Events
Neighbourhood Safety & Crime Prevention Walks
Throughout November, the Windsor Essex Regional Community Safety & Well-Being Plan (the Plan) partnered with local law enforcement for Neighbourhood Safety & Crime Prevention Walks in LaSalle, Amherstburg, and Colchester. Residents learned how to prevent opportunities for crime, changed the way they see and walk through their neighbourhoods, and learned personal safety tips. Neighbourhood Safety & Crime Prevention Walks align with Priority #2 of the Plan, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
Crime Prevention Week at Devonshire Mall
From November 4 to 8, 2024, law enforcement and service providers set up information booths at Devonshire Mall to discuss crime prevention and public safety with residents in honour of Crime Prevention Week. Crime Prevention Week showcases the successful collaborative efforts between police services and community organizations as we work towards the common goal of preventing crime and creating safe, resilient communities across Ontario. This year's theme is "Awareness in Action: Keeping Ontario Safe Together."
City of Windsor representatives set up a Windsor Essex Regional Community Safety & Well-Being Plan booth to promote and spread awareness of the Plan while promoting Priority #2, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
Launch of SSNAPP Neighbourhood Safety Plans
On October 16, 2024, Substance Supports in Neighbourhoods Accessed through Police Partnerships (SSNAPP) published Neighbourhood Safety Plans. SSNAPP developed these plans for the N9A, N8X, N8Y, and N8W postal areas. They include crucial resources, including mental health, substance use, and housing resources; who to call during emergency or non-emergency situations; and tips for various situations. Check out our newly developed Neighbourhood Safety Plans.
SSNAPP is a partnership between the Windsor Police Service (WPS), the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU), and the City of Windsor. SSNAPP aligns with the Plan and supports ongoing efforts to address the far-reaching effects of the opioid and other substance crises across Windsor and Amherstburg.
SSNAPP aligns with Priority #3 of the Plan, “Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports.” These Neighbourhood Safety Plans also align with Priority #2 of the Plan, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
School Safety and Crime Prevention Assessments
Throughout October, City of Windsor representatives attended multiple School Safety and Crime Prevention Assessments in Windsor-Essex. Organized by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, these assessments are part of an initiative to review school and neighbourhood infrastructure as it relates to active transportation and safety. These assessments included observation of common school routes, discussion of key areas of concern, and completion of walkability/bikeability checklists. These School Safety and Crime Prevention Assessments align with Priority #2 of the Plan, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
Downtown Windsor Community Collaborative Community Park Events
Throughout the summers of 2023 and 2024, SSNAPP has been supporting Downtown Windsor Community Collaborative (DWCC) Community Park Events. These events bring residents and local service providers together in the downtown core. As previously mentioned, SSNAPP aligns with Priority #3 of the Plan, “Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports.” These community engagement events align with Priority #2 of the Plan, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
Festival of Guest Nations & Public Safety Information Day
On September 15, 2024, City of Windsor representatives attended the Festival of Guest Nations & Public Safety Information Day in Leamington to promote and spread awareness of the Plan while promoting Priority #2, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
Community Overdose Prevention Training
On August 21, 2024, the Windsor-Essex Community Opioid & Substance Strategy (WECOSS), in partnership with SSNAPP, Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association (BIA), Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, and Essex Windsor Emergency Medical Services (EMS), hosted Community Overdose Prevention Training. At this training, participants learned how to identify the signs of an opioid overdose and administer naloxone. This training algins with Priority #3 of the Plan, “Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports.”
Motivational Interviewing Workshop
On July 9, 2024, the Crisis & Trauma Training Resource Institute facilitated a workshop that provided its participants with new ways to facilitate the change process in the people they work with. This workshop was also sponsored by SSNAPP. As previously mentioned, SSNAPP aligns with Priority #3 of the Plan, “Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports.”
Toolkit Launch: Neighbourhood Safety & Crime Prevention Walks
On June 27, 2024, the Plan unveiled the Neighbourhood Safety & Crime Prevention Walk Toolkit. Participants discovered the value and sustainability of neighbourhood safety & crime prevention walks, received a customizable toolkit to adapt key principles of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), and were led on a neighbourhood safety & crime prevention walk to change the way they see and walk through their neighbourhoods. De-Escalating Potentially Violent Situations Workshop
On April 26, 2024, the Crisis & Trauma Training Resource Institute facilitated a SSNAPP-sponsored workshop to teach local service providers how to de-escalate potentially violent situations through assertiveness and interpersonal communication. SSNAPP aligns with Priority #3 of the Plan, “Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports.”
Community Overdose Prevention Training
On April 24, 2024, SSNAPP, in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association Windsor-Essex County and Windsor-Essex Community Opioid & Substance Strategy, hosted Community Overdose Prevention Training. At this training, participants learned about opioids, listened to stories from people with lived experience, and received naloxone and drug test strip training. As previously mentioned, SSNAPP aligns with Priority #3 of the Plan, “Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports.”
Ignite Change & Mitigate Risk: Knowledge Transfer Symposium
On February 27, 2024, the Crisis & Trauma Training Resource Institute facilitated a workshop that provided its participants with a framework for assisting people to move forward with healthy ways of coping. These events were sponsored by SSNAPP, which aligns with Priority #3 of the Plan, "Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports."
