Inclusive Recreation Programming

The Recreation Department offers inclusive program options for individuals with disabilities who want to be involved in recreational programming. The Inclusive Programming team will do their best to group participants with others who have similar interests, abilities and needs in a positive and safe environment. This program aims to provide an opportunity for participants with exceptionalities to socialize and enjoy recreation programming by offering programs with smaller group sizes and adapted activities in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Participants wishing to partake in Inclusive Recreation Programming must obtain an Inclusive Recreation Programming Membership.

How to Register for Inclusive Recreation Programming

To access Inclusive Recreation Programming, participants will need an Inclusive Recreation Programming Membership. If you have never registered in inclusive programming before, contact the Inclusive Recreation Programming team prior to the programming session to assess the participant's eligibility for an Inclusive Recreation Programming Membership. Once a participant has an Inclusive Recreation Programming Membership, registration for Inclusive Programs can begin.

Membership Process

The Inclusive Recreation Programming Membership has been created for participants with exceptionalities. To obtain an Inclusive Recreation Programming Membership, follow the steps listed below:

  1. Complete the Inclusive Recreation Membership Application Survey to provide basic information on the participant's needs.
  2. An Inclusive Programming team member will contact you within three days of survey submission to review the collected information and obtain additional information, if required.

Safety and Supervision

Most inclusive recreation programs are offered at a one-to-six (1:6) ratio (1 instructor for every 6 participants). If a participant requires additional support (for example, one-to-one [1:1] support), we encourage families to send someone with the participant to provide as-needed assistance during the program.

Recreation program instructors are trained with Standard First Aid with CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) Level C; EpiPen training; and specialized training in recreation, programming, safety and emergency procedures, group dynamics and positive behaviour management. Our leaders are energetic and dedicated to providing participants with a fun, safe and memorable experience.

Staff assist participants by providing modifications in program instruction, movement, equipment and communication. They also promote and encourage socialization. Support may include assistance with instructions, assistance with complex activities or assistance with turn-taking. Staff cannot assist with any washroom needs, outside of verbal prompts.

Staff encourage as much independence as possible.
